My roo happily kept 24 gals fertile last season.

No depends on the breed but for any breed more than 15 hens is a problem especially if their yard isn’t big enough because the hens will keep sexually harassing the rooster and this isn’t even a joke look here https://www.facebook.com/groups/523095835630685/permalink/584361416170793/I just ordered 17 chicks from cackle hatchery that were supposed to be all pullets but I have one RIR rooster. I've never had a rooster before but I don't think I want to get rid of it. Is it possible to have too many hens per rooster?![]()
Not true. Though...funny vid lol.No depends on the breed but for any breed more than 15 hens is a problem especially if their yard isn’t big enough because the hens will keep sexually harassing the rooster and this isn’t even a joke look here https://www.facebook.com/groups/523095835630685/permalink/584361416170793/
I've had 2 roosters that I've hand raised from birth and they are my sweet boys! They keep my girls safe and I can pick them up and snuggle them too!I'm probably not going to breed them. But I've had chickens for the past 6-7 years so I'm not completely new to it. I've just never owned a rooster. Lots of my other family members have had roosters before. I know how mean they can get, believe me I've heard lots of stories. But I think I'm ready for one, besides I need him to protect my hens! But, thank you for your advice!![]()

Yah but ... You won’t get a higher rate of fertility. I tried that in the past when I was running low on roosters with the desirable traits for many of my breed inventions. But the rate of infertile eggs was around 25%. It doesn’t sound that much but even a fertile egg isn’t guaranteed to lead to a healthy hatching chick and more importantly doesn’t guarantee the chick with the traits you want especially when making new breeds. It’s better off to just get an additional roo or just place all the hens with the one roo. I personally don’t place more than 20 hens per rooster. Except for No.0241 the family calls him Casanova. And I’ll let you guess how big his harem is lol. What’s most unique about him too is he was a functionally extinct breed of asiatic Bantam. Now there’s 52 identical yet impure specimens of No.0241 so now his breed will live on. Hopefully his descendants also posses the traits of a pure prewar Kurdish bantam breed.A hen will be fertile from one mating from 14 to 21 days. If you decide to hatch out a group, you might want to divide the hens into two groups and leave him with one group for a week, then the other group for a week. Just to make sure he gets everyone. They have favorites.
