Is it recommended to start over when flock has ILT?

just my opinion..but knowing for sure is important..
so, I'd do the swab and get a test done.

could the blood you're seeing be from pecking and fighting from being cooped up?

are the birds throwing mucus, or bloody mucus?
ILT is the only thing I can think of that cause that symptom..
tho it's slightly possible they could have sinus infection and respiratory illness..
Tylan 50 or Tylan 200 injectable would treat that..

best to know for sure.

I would get them tested so you know what you are dealing with.

I think this is very important also. You will have to clean the coop. You should ask pips&peeps how you go about that and what you should use to do it.

If it's not ILT then you can figure out what to do from there, Yah know I'm wondering if your neighbors are that close to you and think yours got it from the wild birds in the area wouldnt your neighbors birds have it to ? Thats why I think you should have them tested before culling !! Maybe it's not !!

The chicks from 08 you hatched them yourself ? Or you got them from someone in the area ?

Have you lost anymore ?

I got the chicks from feed stores in the area.

I only saw the bloody flecks on the walls for one day and not again since. It seemed like just enough for one chicken to be throwing it. No it couldn't be from pecking on eachother, no one has any wounds.

I thought about what if it is not ILT, but it seems that most of the resp diseases make them carriers for life and not the same afterward. Whatever it is I don't want it spread to my chicks. The only way I can see to do this is to stop going out to the old chickens. (ie cull them) What would you do?

How long does it take to get the results back? My first 2 eggs hatch on the 1st!!

Thanks again for your support and advice!

I checked on the flock this am and all are shaking their heads but my two black austerlops. They have all been on Sulmet for 62 hrs now and no improvement.
ILT and some other diseases have no cure. I think the only way to protect my babies from whatever this is is to cull the old flock. I will try to call the ext agency now, will let you know what I hear back.

I spoke with a vet at the dept of ag reportable disease number and Dr Chang said ILT is not reportable and suggested quarantine and bio safety. I told him my plan to keep the chicks safe and he said that sounded like a good plan.

OK-now I think I have all the info to make an informed decision. What would you guys do???

You told him your plan as in culling your whole flock to keep the babies safe?

I would still get them tested, I would want to know what the problem was before I culled my whole flock. If for some reason it's not ILT (which I'm starting to wonder if it is, since your not losing many) maybe there is somthing that can be done. I just wouldnt feel right culling my whole flock in till I knew 100% what it was, Thats just me and what I would do !!

I think the babies in the bator will be fine in the house as long as you are very caful about not bringing anything in to them.

Dase I'm going to PM you.

I was't sure if you guys wanted to hear my final decision or not. I ended up culling my old flock, which was depressing. Then we proceeded to santize all equipment, the coop our shoes the garage and house.....

Then as the evening was wearing down and we were all tired and a little down, the two eggs due on the 1st had cracks in them!!!! God has amazing timing! They came out completely yesterday and both are fuzzy and healthy.

I didn't feel like I had time to test before the chicks were coming.

Even though I made my own decision, I do appreciate all of your help and advice!

Looking forward to raising a new flock!

You did a brave, responsible thing and I applaud you, though I know how depressing that had to be.

I would recommend that you purchase some vaccine called LT-IVAX and vaccinate your new chicks when they are six weeks old.

This vaccine is a nonspreading vaccine and you will have to give them a booster, but it is better than going through this again.

If you suspect the wild birds gave you this, they will be back next year and still be carrying the disease.
