I have 10 hens and my blue red laced wyandotte, Joy, has gone broody. I put her in an all wire rabbit hutch inside the coop run with food and water, raised up off the deep litter. I tried letting her sleep on the roost with her sisters up in the hen house, but it allows her to continue her broodiness on the roost (nest boxes are blocked from her at this point). I read that I am supposed to leave her in the wire hutch day and night. I know she is secure from predators, as our run is completely enclosed in hardware cloth with it dug down 18 inches into the ground, but I am concerned about night temperatures. Is is safe to allow her to sleep there overnight, by herself? I guess a better question is, what is the acceptable night low temp for a lone hen to sleep and stay warm enough?
