Is it safe to put hatchlings under a broody on days 19-21?

I'm freaked out.
No reason to freak out. Sorry.

Actually the amprolium doesn't block thiamine but mimics it to slow the growth of and help starve out the coccidia since that is what they feed on, while the chicks can build better immunity.

Medicated feed might be the right choice for YOU! :thumbsup It won't hurt anyone. I'm not sure if there is a withdrawal time for egg produced by hens that eat it or not. It might be listed here...

Sounds like you have made some changes with the early introduction of dirt and all and are doing everything you can to avoid any repeats of that awful incident. :highfive:

Please be aware that even using medicated feed SOMETIMES isn't enough. So if you do start to see any symptoms that give you cause for concern, just don't let it give you any false sense of security.. meaning it CAN still happen and you might still need to treat. Some people face special circumstances regarding stock load, weather, pasture conditions or so on.

Good luck for a doting mum! :fl:jumpy:jumpy

Hi everybody! my mama is doing great! She LOVES her fake eggs. I'll purchase 7 day olds this coming Thursday at 830a when they arrive at the feed store. When Oprah is sleeping, I will put them under her butt and take the fakes away. Pics to follow!!!

Good Luck.

We've had success with broody adopting 5-day old chicks her first time around (introduced at night, only fake eggs underneath), and then day-olds the next time around - also introduced at night in the dark. Both times momma was broody for about 2.5 weeks. The momma was separated from the flock in a 6x3 brooder with nest box, and after a few days, they get let into a sectioned off area of the main run with momma hen for a few weeks till a bit bigger and older, but before momma hens hormones wane.

Thank you. I went to the store today and let my husband choose the breeds he wants for when pick up on Thursday. Currently, all the chickens I have are all my own doing. Anyway, it was not easy to walk away from those tiny fluffy butts. I thought I had to get them as young as possible but I guess not and you are proof of adding older babies. So very good to know! We do have her in a brooding area in her own box. She is so happy and content and I am so happy to see her that way. Fills my heart!

MAMA ACCEPTED ALL 7 BABIES TONIGHT! Baby pics tonight and mama w/baby pics tomorrow.
