Does anyone have any experience with using witch hazel mulch in their run? I have a small covered run that I use regular pine shavings in. The covered area stays dry, but I also have an uncovered run that has become hard packed dirt. I have access to some witch hazel mulch, but I'm not sure if it is safe to use around the chickens.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread.
I've never even heard of such a mulch.

I "googled" it.
I don't think there would be any problems with using it.

Welcome to BYC!
Is this mulch fresh chipped plants/trees or byproduct from extraction?
Where are you getting it?
Never heard of this being available where are you located?

Hi, The mulch is a byproduct from a local distillery that makes (organic) witch hazel products. From what I have read the pulp left over from the manufacturing process is recycled as garden mulch. The local garden store sells the mulch, but I just want to be sure it is safe to be around the chickens.

It's probably fine, as a byproduct any aromatics are gone which might have been a concern.
Is it dry and in bags when you buy it...or do you buy it by the cubic yard?
