Is it the stupid deer again?

Deer will eat anything and everything. My grandparents had to resort to putting up an 8 foot fence that looks like alcatraz. They did that 25 years ago and that was the only thing that stopped them.. That and me and my husband thin the herd every deer season.

We've got a herd of 10 or so that visit us regularly--one doe manages to throw twins each year so that increases the population considerably. I finally resorted to fencing. I made a framework out of 1" PVC that I clamp deer netting to using C-shaped PVC clamps. This makes the fencing portable so I can remove it in the fall and access the whole garden to rototill it. (I move some of the panels around my rhododendron for the winter.) This works great in deterring the deer only one problem: some cottontail rabbits chewed a hole through the bottom so I have them chomping off carrot tops and beans. I also have found a product called "Deer Scram" works great to keep both deer and rabbits away--the only problem is it has to be reapplied periodically.

We have a 5 foot fence up. I tied plastic grocery sacks around the top of the fence. They blow in the wind and rustle. I've also gotten hair from my hair stylist and sprinkled that around. I've done dog hair from my dog. You can also go online and look for recipes to make your own deer away spray. I mix up my own -- it contains eggs, milk, vinegar, dish soap, garlic, and black pepper. It works, but has to be reapplied.

My DH would love to see that groundhog down here; all our garden has produced is yellow squash & zukes and he's thoroughly sick of them. No predators for those veggies apparently!

Deer eat everything. They get past every barrier. Yes, the deer spray gets old. It still works some, but doesn't stink quite as bad. I had some pumpkins come up in a wheelbarrow full of compost and thought I'd let them grow, just for grins. They actually started to vine a bit, and then, gone. The deer have been particularly bad this year. They climb in my coop and clean out the chicken feed. They eat every apple, plum and blackberry. They munch down the daylilies, which they aren't supposed to like.

I need Steve to come sit on my porch and thin the herd. Oh wait, that's another thread.

My husband shot one in his slippers and boxer shorts once with a cigarette in his mouth.

What was the deer doing wearing slippers and boxer shorts, and SMOKING?? Oh . . . Never mind.
