Is it time to panic? NEW UPDATE - SEVEN!!!

Quote:
This is where I get confused... it sounds to me like these eggs did pip on day 26 and hatch on day 27 or 28. And I had a pea egg under a chicken hen, it pipped on day 26 and hatched under day 27. So isn't the time line about right here?

Shirley

With all the drama it's hard to tell so i'll just shut up, if it works go for it.

Hey Shaun,

I know that you want to get them out, but you still need to be patient. They will be fine for a few days after they hatch. Let the others go for a couple more days. You never know. You may have some that will pip late. Trust me, you are better off leaving them in there and not changing a thing that is going on in the incubator. So far everything seems to be going right in there, don't chance it yet. I DO know it is so, so hard not to go in there pull those poults out. Congrates on the hatch so far.

With most incubators I would agree but with the Brinsea Octagon series temp and humidity get back to desired levels within a minute or 2 of transferring your new babies to a brooder. Just make sure they are all completely dry. It will not hurt the eggs still in the process of hatching. Side benefit you will have the poults in the brooder to entertain you so you will be more patient with the remaining eggs left in the bator.

If I am correct..experts chime in here please...I'm guessing Turkey are like chickens as far as living a few days of their absorbed yolk (they wont be big on eating or drinking for the first couple days anyway because of their yolk).
I would personally leave them in for at least 24 hours so that they are nice and dry, AND that will allow the other eggs time to get to pipping if they are going to. If you do have to open the incubator make sure you have something to spray a warm mist over the eggs..humidity is important and opening the lid is going to let part of that out as well as temp drop.
I don't know but have been told that poults are very hard to raise and just anything can take them down, so personally I'd do everything in my power to keep temps regulated and let them babies dry off real REAL good.

Not asking you to shut up Steve, I really am confused. Your opinions and knowledge are valued highly by most of us here!

Late update. Spoke to hubby late evening - there are FIVE little babies now!!

I was planning on leaving them in the incubator until late morning. Hubby says it's pretty crowded in there - the Brinsea doesn't have very much room, but if you all think they should stay for awhile, I'm good with that as you sure have had good advice thus far. Thanks to every one of you who listened to me worry and fret and stew.

I'm just SO excited to finally have a successful hatch

We've spent the last 3 summers trying to hatch turkeys without any real success. Lots of dead embryos, lots of dead fully formed poults that failed to hatch... We were beginning to think someone had put a "turkey hex" on us

We've successfully raised cattle, sheep, hogs, ducks, geese, chickens... we had no idea turkeys would be such a challenge! Guess the incubator made all the difference - wish someone would have told me that 3 summers ago - would have saved a lot of heartbreak and money.

Yesterday was a fantastic day.

5 new fuzzy babies, and I got to save someone's life here at work. Most of the time my job is pretty routine, but once in a while, you get to make The Difference in someone's life and it gives you a really warm feeling. Life is just great some days, and yesterday was one of them. Gosh, what a fine way to end August and start saying good-bye to summer.

And now, only 4 and a half hours until I can go home and see those babies!!!

I have a brinsea octagon type incubator too - I didn't open it last time until I had 13 little guys in there - it was so crowded they had their little fuzzfaces squashed up against the plastic.

Yup, I opened it and took them out, really quickly. And the rest hatched fine. I don't know how big baby turkeys are, but I think 5 in there would be OK even with more babies so I'd leave em for a bit.

You might talk to Steve about the overcrowding, or someone else on here who's had experience with the Brensia. I'm just so tickled for you all.. 5 lil ones after all this time, you have to be on cloud 9. Congrat's

So how many do you have left to go, and did the one pipping on the wrong end hatch? Inquiring minds want to know!
