I had to put down my first full grown hen this past summer. It's not an easy chore and took me about 45 minutes to do the deed. I took a splitting log, put two long nails about an inch and a half apart in it. I put the hens head between the nails, gently pulled her body so her neck was streched out and cut off her head with a very sharp and large butcher knife. It was not easy to do, but I felt better knowing she was out of pain. There was not the flopping around that I expected. Good luck!
