Is it time to put her to sleep-How??

This will work, but ether in liquid form will irritate mucus membranes of the eye, nose & throat.

It would be less stressful on the animal to put it in a sealed container with a jar & rag soaked in ether.

The fumes will make it go to sleep, then let the animal stay in the container for 45 minutes to make sure of an overdose.

The best buckets are the 5 gal that have a screw on cap. Usually the only way to get those particular lids is if you buy paint that has to be tinted. Ok, so once you have the bucket with the screw on cap, you follow the process above; but you put the lid on the bucket open the small cap. Then fog the bucket through the small hole. Once you've got it good and cloudy in there, screw the cap on. This keeps more of the starting fluid in the container and you'll breathe less of it.

I agree with other posters that severing the spinal cord is faster, but based on the comments of the person asking how to do this, I don't think this individual is capable of doing the deed with a hatchet.

I have used this method before, So I can tell you a little about it, as well as having Euthanized animals via injection as a former Animal Control Officer.

Ether was used as an anesthetic for humans for surgery for many years, but better methods have been discovered, so ether isn't used in hospitals anymore.

Ether makes the animal sleepy, just like anesthetizing humans, they go to sleep, unaware and unconscious, they no longer feel anything.
If you removed the animal from the container at this point and kept it in fresh air, it would wake up in a little while, no worse for wear.

When putting the animal down you leave it in the ether fumes and it continues the effect, it is cumulative, and when a fatal dose is recieved the respiritory system shuts down. This is exactly what happens at the vets office with an overdose of sodium penabarbitol (sp) the shot acts on the system faster because it is injected into the bloodstream rather than waiting to be processed by the lungs & heart.

Technically both methods are sufficaton, as is lethal injection for criminals.

Having the vet perform Euthinasia is prefferable, at least for me, but sometimes for reasons beyond our control it must be done at home, and sodium pen. is a controlled substance, so not an option at home.

Nupine, please let us know what you decide. I'm sure that if you decide to cull this chicken, you will need some support and I'm sure that if you decide to let it live in the sling, you will need some support. Either way, you've got mine.

Good luck.

We had to put a puppy down that we found abandoned and hit by a car once. We dug a hole, put the puppy into a paper bag in the hole and and Dh shot it twice at close range with the shot gun. Died instantly and didn't ahve to suffer more. And we didn't have to look it in the eye. Just a suggestion.

So sorry...whatever you decide, it won't be easy. I agree that if the SPCA will do it, that would be your best option.

However, using ether works well. If you can spray a cotton rag with the starting fluid, then hold it to her beak/nose until she falls asleep. She will be unconcious at that point and not feeling anything. You could then decapitate her with a hatchet/ large knife...knowing that she didn't feel anything.

Best of luck to you...I'll be thinking about you...

She is still alive, I think I will ask about euthanasia. We are good friends with people at the local dog pound, not sure if they would do a chicken though.

Call the pound and explain your situation. Our local pound euthanized a rat I caught in a live catch trap in my attic. Not their usual - but they knew I couldn't do anything myself.

I know this post is very old... but I was wondering what you chose
