I have used this method before, So I can tell you a little about it, as well as having Euthanized animals via injection as a former Animal Control Officer.
Ether was used as an anesthetic for humans for surgery for many years, but better methods have been discovered, so ether isn't used in hospitals anymore.
Ether makes the animal sleepy, just like anesthetizing humans, they go to sleep, unaware and unconscious, they no longer feel anything.
If you removed the animal from the container at this point and kept it in fresh air, it would wake up in a little while, no worse for wear.
When putting the animal down you leave it in the ether fumes and it continues the effect, it is cumulative, and when a fatal dose is recieved the respiritory system shuts down. This is exactly what happens at the vets office with an overdose of sodium penabarbitol (sp) the shot acts on the system faster because it is injected into the bloodstream rather than waiting to be processed by the lungs & heart.
Technically both methods are sufficaton, as is lethal injection for criminals.
Having the vet perform Euthinasia is prefferable, at least for me, but sometimes for reasons beyond our control it must be done at home, and sodium pen. is a controlled substance, so not an option at home.
