Is it too cold for my chickens? Do you heat your coop?

I'm in West Seattle and it was 25 degrees in my coop this morning! I'm worried about my girls. I have a small heated panel on the wall behind their roost, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I have five 22 week old pullets -- all supposed to be cold hardy -- Barred Rock, Buff Orp, Australorp, and Speckled Sussex. I don't supplement light and I haven't had any eggs yet. I'm wondering what others do in this weather.

That temperature is fine, especially for cold hardy breeds like yours. Chickens are quite good at keeping themselves warm, even down to below zero temperatures. The most important thing is to make sure that their coop is free of drafts, but still well ventilated. Moisture is more problematic than cold.

I don't heat my coop, and my birds do fine in temperatures down below zero. Many others keep chickens successfully, without heat, as far north as Alaska.
