Is it true scratch grain during the summer can kill your flock?

Lol! What took you so long? Every time I read a thread dealing with this subject you always seem to be all over it. It's so funny, because I have a hard time recognizing people on these forums, but whenever I see your name I think, "Oh! it's the myth buster!"

Poultry grain (scratch) should be available 12 hours per day along with layer 24/7 and clean fresh water.

The myth comes from corn in horse feed. The horses get "hot", meaning they have more energy and are harder to deal with.

Being hot is not a matter of temperature, it is a matter of calorie intaike. Hens in general NEED lots of calories because they are continually maiking new potential babies.

The roos if you will notice are pretty self contained. Watch you roos in free range. They will call thier hens to food and let them eat.

Chickens are not like a dumb horse. A horse will eat until they colic and die.

If you free range you absolutely do not need to worry about feeding poultry grain. Just put it up and feed it during the day time for about 12 hours.

Your chickens will get the message and will wait to go out until you put the poultry grain down. They are not as stupid as some think.

LOL........serious?......lol

I have not heard anything like this about the scratch, though I had been told about the chickens and heat in the summer.....

When I read that on the forums being a noob, i was skeptical. But then I got to thinking... how exactly can scratch raise the body temp? I mean, really? I totally understand that corn has calories and if you get more calories then you burn, fat is stored and extra fat on a body helps to insulate...BUT, who came up with the myth that corn DIRECTLY increases the chickens body temp??

I decided this was a myth on my own. I think there should be some kind of sticky for myths that need to be busted for all of us newbies out there.

Thanks for asking this and all the answers!
