Is it true you're not to feed chickens anything moldy?

No, please please please do not feed them ANYTHING moldy or rancid. It'll make them sick. if it's about to go bad, but not moldy, that's fine, but if there's mold just toss it. you can feed your chickens just about anything, just not mold. I feel like this should be a no-brainer, but I had to explain this to my family too, so I guess not

If half the things that “killed chickens” actually killed chickens...chickens would be extinct. :D

That being said...mold is a risk. I put a lot of food waste into my run composter, and the good news is that given many options, they avoid stuff that’s moldy.

If I had only moldy food or something completely moldy, I’ll compost it outside the run. But a loaf of bread with a little mold spot?

Oranges are rather inexpensive here. Some of my flocks have thoroughly enjoyed oranges that I cut in half and toss into their yard, others give me the stink eye over the offering. It's not poisonous. The flocks that truly loved oranges, did not have issues with eggs or their shells.

It’s funny how they have their individual likes and dislikes, isn’t it? Or one day they want one thing, and the next day something totally different?

Mine get access to some citrus (oranges, grapefruit) but don’t often partake, preferring their other options.
