Is Light Necessary During Incubation?

First time incubating.

I'm planning to use a dark closet inside of our guest bathroom that we don't really use.
I figure this has the most stable temperature in the house, but it's almost pitch black in there unless I open the door or turn the light on.

Is any kind of light necessary for the incubation period?

Thank you!

Not sure if it matters, but I'm using a GQF Genesis 1588 Incubator with a turner and will be incubating a dozen LF Ameracauna eggs.

My 1588 works well! Move the eggs to a new locations daily to combat heat and humidity variances and keep hatch frame tight. The turner can get warm near the motor.

NO light should not matter as far as I can tell for incubation. It is likely dark under a hen. After hatch... yes light is good. I don't worry too much the first day... but they will become MUCH more active in the light.

My blue eggs are just as hard to see through as my Marans when candling... I would go NO higher than 35-40% humidity... down to 25% would be good... in my experience. I use a surface well (tin foil boat) during incubation for easy access to add water, then use the wells underneath during hatch.

WOW, this is excellent information. Thank you!
I'll make sure to keep the eggs away from the motor since I'll only have a dozen. Will look into your tin foil boat method! If you think of anything else, please feel free to share. I've been trying to read up on this as much as possible the last month:caf, yet still learning something new every day! :wee

I was thinking about it... and actually I keep all my incubators dark, covered with blankets during incubation to help maintain my temps as my house does swing wildly.

Also, in case you haven't seen this link it is one of my very favorite hatching resources...

I would use a different container for water but foil was easiest for me to fit in the space still left. It isn't perfect but works. :)

What day did you set on?

I sat 10 Silkie eggs in my 1588 on the 23rd! :jumpy:jumpy

Considering setting more. Though one of my pastures already looks like an army of Silkie cuteness! :D Maybe I better find that IA (incubators anonymous) thread and join..
