Is lock down a strict rule?

I unfortunately had to open it because I had the 1st born attacking the others that came. He was strong enough to grab them and pull them around, so he had to come out. The 2nd time I had 9 out kicking hatching eggs all over the place. There were A LOT of eggs so I couldn't leave them in. The 3rd time was for the baby that couldn't stand. After he had pipped 12 hours earlier I knew he needed help. I did so many eggs this time because it was my 1st time and I needed a good amount going. Next time it will be smaller and I shouldn't have to open the incubator. Your babies are adorable. I think mine are scared of the dark. When the brooder light kicks it's self off at 98* they run from the other side of the brooder where their food and water is. When it's on they run back to the food and water. My baby that is on his own has a light staying on for warmth, so when the others run back, it points them at the light even though it's farther away and dim for them

You have your brooder on a thermostat? You can always get an led bulb that doesn't put off much heat and leave it on by your heat lamp. This way all the lights don't go off when it gets up to temp.

Yes it's on a temperature control shut off. The same kind that regulated their incubator. We did try the LED bulb and we had a few shanking so hard we actually thought they were having a seizure. It's a red brooder bulb now

Okay, that's strange I've used both and now I've only been using regular soft white bulbs. I almost used a temp controller in my brooder but I use a dimmer switch instead. I have two 150w bulbs and I just dim them down until I get the temp where I want it.

I did a big hatch too this weekend. Hatched 37 fri/sat, 86 sat/sun, and currently have 26 out of 40 hatched right now. I'm done for a WHILE, it is addicting though....

I wonder if maybe my box is just bigger than yours? Maybe that's why the LED didn't work? It's a huge 150qt tub. Maybe I should get a smaller one? Eventually I'll soak up enough knowledge for you all here and I'll be 9n autopilot like a pro

I'm not sure why it didn't work but I don't think that's the reason :gig...

Mines a 220qt (55 gallon) from home depot. It's 47" x 22" I think. Don't go smaller, bigger the better.

Was the LED light the size of the brooder lights? This was just a normal standard bulb? I forgot to mention that

So I undwrstand did you....

1) keep the red bulb cycling on and off for heat and add a normal bulb just to provide constant light?

Or....

2) did you replace the red bulb with normal bulb and let it cycle on and off for heat?

Standard LED constantly running. Replaced with red brooder bulb that is temp controlled because the LED wasn't warming them

Yeah LEDs are good for light but bad for heat. I don't know why they freaked out with the normal light though. Here's my 3 brooders...

This one has a 100w ceramic bulb that emits no light. I have an led behind it just to cast a little light inside the brooder.

This one has 2 70w outdoor floodlight bulbs. They keep the temp about 110 so the quail stay on the edge of the light and not directly under it.

Here's my favorite setup. It's 2 150w bulbs hooked to a dimmer switch. I adjust the brightness down so my temp stays around 100. I'm going to set my others up like this when I get time...

I've used the red 250w bulbs and I use these and have never had problems either way.
