Is my baby chick too attached to me?

MadHatcher, what a great story!! I would love a house chicken like that, especially a potty trained one. Love the pics, keep them coming. I wonder what he does when you guys leave the house!!!

I'm just wondering if Excelsior! qualifies as one of the two chickens you're allowed to have since she is in the house (like a big canary or a feathery 2 legged dog). Raising poultry usually refers to birds raised in the yard - not the house.

You know that is a good point... My landlord thinks my love of chicks is super sweet and doesn't personally care how many I own - in or out of the house... I do live on 1/3 of an acre parcel - Which is pretty rare in my city since I live super close to downtown. The property is fenced and the neighbors dogs are probably louder than any flock of hens could be... so I've thought that maybe I could get away with owning more than the allotted two... One other point is that there is actually another house technically still on the same 1/3 parcel that my house is on... my landlords are in the process of making repairs and no one currently lives there but dear friends of mine will be moving in when it is completed (which won't be for probably at least another year) and they love chickens and support my desire to have them on site... So maybe with all that combined I can legally have 4 outside chickens and 1 indoor chicken... You know I've heard about this chicken math before... haha

I think she mostly peeps around her "play-pen" looking for invisible bugs... But she isn't alone often since my husband is out of work and is home with her most of the day...

... just was going to ask... 2 chickens inside and 2 chickens outside?!?

Oh... and just read about your friends moving in... 2 inside/2 outside/2 inside/2 outside=8 chickens... ya gotta love chicken math!

Just so all of you know...

When my husband and I woke up this morning we found Excelsior! dead in her brooder.

I can see no cause for her death... She showed no sign of lethargy, sickness, unhappiness, weakness and upon examination of her body... blood or broken bones.

After some research we've decided it must have been sudden chicken death syndrome.

We're very sad and shocked since she seemed so happy and healthy up until last night even... peeping around eating crickets.
