Hi all,

Today I went out to collect the eggs from my leghorns & there was a light brown egg with them. Is my Barred Rock a hen maybe? Everyone thought unanimously that it was a cockerel. It wouldn't stand still so I could get a good picture, of course! Thanks for your advice!

How old is it? Do you have just leghorns?
Yes, I have 3 leghorns. They just started laying a month ago tomorrow. I'm not sure how old the Barred Rock is, but it's getting just about as big as the Leghorns now. I don't know how big Barred Rocks are supposed to get. Of course I have 2 Easter Eggers & 2 Plymouth Blue Rocks, but they're in another coop.

Take a good look at the saddle feathers (just in front of the tail) Are they pointed? Maybe someone with better eyes can tell from the pic. The coloring of your bird in a pure barred rock would likely indicate male. If it layed the egg it is clearly not male nor is it a pure barred rock as the egg color would be darker.

Seriously, the barring so very rooster, but the feathering is female to me, as are the comb & wattles, and if I overlook the barring, it looks like a POL pullet. Ear lobes are red, typically brown eggs. Right? And I don't see a leghorn suddenly laying brown.

My barred rock just reached laying age and is about twice as wide as my white leghorn. Im not sure if that’s a hen or roo without knowing age. The comb could be a young cockerel, or a hen at laying age. Any crowing? Hard to see the feathers at that angle.

The barring is male specific. But if it's not purebred, that goes out the window.

Are all your Leghorns laying? Did you get 3 eggs?

My Barred rock lays a more reddish/pink brown egg. It could be that one of the Leghorns egg has a heavier bloom today or the Barred Rock gave the egg and it will get darker with time.
