This is my 3 month old barred rock Maggie, She is suppose to be a pullet but im thinking she might be a roo. What has me thinking she might be is i have a mature barred rock hen and she is darker, has white feet/legs and has white beak. My pullet (maggie) has a yellow beak and yellow legs. An older man told me he thought barred rock roos have yellow legs and beaks and the hens have white (not sure if this is true or not). My pullet also has small bumps where spurs would be growing. Pls help me!!

I appologize about the picture being so dark.

Can't tell by that photo, but it does appear to be a pullet. All Barred Rocks, male or female, should have yellow legs and beaks. If your others have white legs they are not BRs or are mixed with something else.

I have posted these shots so many times, glad I have them,
can't really see your shot, too dark as you said, so see if yours looks like one of mine.

roos are lighter in color:

pullets are darker:

from what I can see, yours looks like a pullet to me, as far as coloring goes...post some lighter pics and we will see better...the leg "spurs" are truly no indication...

*also the male, see his legs, very yellow, the female, black stripe...

Of my 4 barred rock chicks, 1 of them was always a lighter color and "she" turned out to be a roo. They are 17 weeks now and he has already got those longer, wavy tail feathers and was sporting a definite red comb and wattles faster than the other three. With the picture you posted, it's hard to tell. You may have to wait another few weeks from my experience.

Below:Here is a lighter pic of my "pullet" , notice how her tail feathers are already longer than my mature barred rock hen, not to mention that my Rhode Island Red roo hates my barred rock "pullet" which also make me think its a roo.

below: Here is my mature hen, just to compare the two

JodyJo, my "pullet" looks like your roo, thanks for the pics!

I read somewhere that when barred rock chicks are born, the pullets have black running down the front of their legs and the roos will not, it said it was 90% accurate. I have Two 3 week old barred rock and one has the black down the front of the legs and one does not. Guess ill have to wait and see if its accurate.

It looks like a roo to me, but still hard to see real clearly in the photos. If the fronts of the legs are plain yellow without any black shading and the feathering is lighter greyish, with more white than black, then yes it's a roo.

Here is my little 3 month old SAMSON, the mini stud!!!! Notice the greyish lighter feathering and light yellow legs
