Is my black australorp a roo?

Cock-a-doodle-ROO! Look at that comb! I hope we are all wrong b/c I just think the australorps are the prettiest birds around! IMO

Don't give up yet. My Stella had a large red comb from early on and she has a large tail with rounded feathers so I though she was a he. Now her comb is so big that it flops over to one side but she is definitely a she and she lays nice pretty cream colored eggs. She is also from MPC. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks for all the input! So it's probably a rooster, but Stella is giving me a little hope... thank you for that! I'm not going to re-home her just yet, I will wait to see how she/he matures. I hope she is a "she" because I really wanted an australorp!

Too bad you are not in WA! I would trade you for a hen. I need a Roo. I have 2 but I have a LOT of BA hens and I want at least 3 BA Roos.

But seriously, I have some hens that are a few months old and don't have a comb that red. My vote is roo but its true.... you never know until the crow or egg. Don't rehome it until it either crows or lays an egg.

Some other things to look for in black australorps I've noticed. The males have shinier feathers and more blues and greens. Feathers also look pointier. I have one cockerel now who is growing saddle feathers really long and he still doesn't have any tail feahers. He looks funny.

But the roo feathers are so much shinier. It looks like he hopped in my Olive Oil Jar

Really REALLY sorry, I think that might be a roo...

But, just keep your fingers crossed!

Darn! I would totally trade! Thanks for the tips, I will be keeping a close eye on this one.

Well, it's official. He's a boy.

I let them out this morning and heard a strange noise. I looked out and waited and sure enough, he did it again... two more times for me.

I'm asking my sister-in-law (who's a vet tech) if she knows anyone who will take him. I'm in San Jose, CA if you are interested. He's very sweet, eats out of my hand and seeks me out for attention.
