I think one of my BO is getting closer to laying but I thought I would get some more expert opinions on it. Her comb and waddles are bigger and redder than her sister and today I noticed when my rooster came up behind her she assumed the position before he even tried to do the dance. Does that mean she is close and if it does how much longer do you think it could be?

I have read from someone I follow closely on this site that you can tell how close a hen is by measuring pelvic spacing between the hens legs. At 2 finger widths he was calling his ready and within the week he was getting eggs. Hope that helps and your chicken are willing to cooperate.

If she is getting red comb and wattles, she is getting close. Also, measure from her pelvic bone to her vent. If its two fingers, she should be getting close, when they are laying, it's about four fingers or so.
Thank you so much for the correct information. I just remember him measuring the pelvis somehow and since in human anatomy our femurs connect to it was thinking that was his measurement. :goodpost:

Okay here 1 more question same topic for the most part I think she may have laid her first egg today has anyone heard of a hen go broody on their first egg?

Talking bout the same BO she is in the box and I know there is an egg in there and is not leaving the box she's not getting buffy but she will stare you down if you even think of reaching in there.
