Thanks so much for all the answers. I am going to keep the chicks in the tub for few weeks I think they have plenty of room for now. I might try to build something bigger for later while I am working to build the chicken tractor. It is pretty cold here right now but I imagine that it will be warmer in the next week or so and I will take the chicks back to the basement. They are fine right now in the spare room but I am sure that will be an issue as they grow.
I was planning on getting some grit but I didn't want to make the drive out to the Tractor Supply store again right away. I have wasted almost a tank of gas just looking at the chicks. I will be over on that side of town again later next week so I just wanted to make sure I could wait until then to get some. It looks like I can as long as I don't feed them anything but there feed.
I had been picking them up a lot because I want them to be used to people. I don't really want them as a lap pet but I do want them to be used to people. I have some nephews who would love to help me take care of the chickens and I don't want them to be scared of them. I found that if you put some feed in your hand they will jump on your hand and there is no need to go grabbing for them.
They are so much fun I have found myself sitting by the tub watching them for way too long. They are so much easier than puppies too...well at least for now they are.
