Is My Chick a Rooster?!

Hi all,

My little chick Indi has very short wings, and I heard that this can be an early indicator of a rooster. She/he is also adventurous in spirit, which I also heard indicates a rooster. He/she has a slightly larger comb than the rest of the chicks as well. I am a little scared, because I can't keep her if she is a rooster!

If what I heard is true, and/or you think she is a rooster/hen please tell me! The hatchery I got her from does guarantee that she/he is a girl, but I would like to be sure. He/She is a barred plymouth rock bantam, could this affect her growth?

Thank you for your time!

(Indi is the black one. Sorry that the photo doesn't really show her wings, but you can see how big her comb is. I will post a new photo soon.)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I hate to disappoint you, but Indi doesn't appear to be a Barred Rock bantam. Barred Rock chicks (bantam or standards) have a white spot on top of their heads which appears to be lacking in Indi. As far as gender goes, Indi is too young to sex. I would recommend posting Indi's pic on our What Breed or Gender is This? section at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this in about 6 weeks and let our experts there take a look at Indi. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I agree with Michael O'Shay, Indi does not appear to be a BR. For comparison, here is a picture of our BR's when they were about the same age as Indi:

Hope Indi turns out to be a girl, if it turns out to be a rooster, it would be hard to give him up.

Good luck to you and thanks for sharing the photo, cute chicks you have there!

I don't see anything at this point in time, that says Indi is a boy. You have to realize you are comparing different breeds that will not all mature at the same time or in the same way. Your chicks are adorable and you are very good at photographing them. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

All,

Thank you for your replies! Indi does have a white spot on top of her head, but it's hidden by the camera angle. She is darker than the BR chicks in the photo though, and since I'm new to chickens I just can't be sure. I can post more pictures soon to help with determining her gender/breed. Quite a shock it would be if she were another breed, but I would adore her just the same. Thanks for the compliments on the picture and the chicks as well as the help! I'll post a picture on the link Michael put up in a few weeks.

Diva,

"I don't see anything at this point in time, that says Indi is a boy."

This sentence confuses me. Do you think Indi is a boy or are you saying what you think I am saying? If you think that this is what I am saying I am not offended, but that isn't true. I am just a little worried because she isn't developing as fast, so I am seeking more guidance. Some confusion of my side, but thank you for your reassurance that she is a unique chick who might just be developing a little slower.
