hi my chicken has been acting wired she has been lying down moving her tail up and down she is a 16 week old Plymouth rock and she has not started laying is she going to lay? she is not egg bound :):idunnomy favorite:woot

My first egg (from this years babies) was yesterday thought she was too young (5 months old). My hens display typical signs. In and out of the nesting box, she had been squatting down when I approached or in front of my older hen. She would stand in front of the nesting box when others went to lay and were singing the egg laying song. Sometimes they get a bit confused when they lay for the first time. Hope this helps.

16 weeks is young for a rock to start laying. Is there any chance that she is overheated ?
yes that is possible is has been very very very hot yesterday it was 105 F and she is out side 24 7 how do i fix heat stress? ho i put ice cubes in her water by the way :hmm

Waving her tail up and down is a good indicator of an egg bound hen. If you approach her from the rear and gently feel her pelvis does it feel at all hard. In Egg peritonitis if you turn her over you would see yellow substance over her vent perhaps.

She’s a Brown. They are known to be prolific layers. Today she sat and sat but no egg (I’ll really have to watch her). It was the hottest day of the summer so far a terrible 107. Now I’m watching to see if she’s bound.

16 weeks is early but not unheard of. Prior to laying full eggs they start practice laying. Shells without eggs yolks with no shells, as long as your sure nothing (shell) is broken or stuck inside of her. Heat stress would see your hen panting, outstretched wings as well as the tail movement. Always best to cover all of your bases. Tony

I have a 16 week old BLRW.She is sitting on the roost in their house, kinda squatted with her tail down.I was checking her,and she didn't move away but but my finger. She isn't lethargic, but didn't come out to eat the treats I took them.Could she be getting ready to lay?

The misters I got (Home Depot) are truly life savers in my opinion (along with a lot of shade) I have friends a couple acres away who’s chickens and rabbits are dying (makes me so mad) they have a Oh Well attitude. It is so worth the 25 dollars I spent. Don’t know if you can tell from the pictures or not.
