Hi, this is Penguin. I got her in a rare breed mix from Meyer hatchery to expand my flock. I also got a buff Brahma, several Easter Eggers, Cream legbar and a lavender Orpington but she has continued to perplex me on her breed.

She is almost 4 months old and the 3rd largest in the group, just a bit smaller than the lavender Orpington. She’s quite a bit stockier than my Easter Eggers though and they are all bearded. She has very lightly feathered legs and her black feathers shine the most beautiful iridescent green. I thought she was a Copper Maran expecting the copper to come through as she developed but it did not and the white hackles just just got more predominant. Then I thought maybe Australorp because of the iridescent sheen but the feathered feet doesn’t match and also considered langshan but I don’t think legs are feathered enough. When she lays that might tell me more from egg color. She’s also has a lovely temperament and doesnt startle too easily. Any other thoughts?

If her feet are pink then she is a birchen marans
YES, I’ve just looked that up and fits to a tee. I’d never heard of this Maran variety. Wonderful! I really wanted a dark egg layer. Her legs are gray silver but her feet are pinkish, especially on the bottom. I never noticed that before. I knew I could count on BYC. Thank you!!!
