Hi, I got 5 rescue hens yesterday and they are great! All laying, eating and drinking. One seems to be a bit off though. Her tail is down and she ejected water from her beak this morning. She's doing all the things you'd expect but she dies seem to be getting picked on by the others. Also (may not be significant) her comb is much smaller than the others? Any ideas gratefully recieved!

What are their ages? It can easily be stress. She's in a new environment and that can be very stressful to some more emotional sensitive hens.

Is it hot where you are? Is it hotter than she was used to? Is her crop full? She could have just drank too much to compensate for the heat. She could also drink a bit extra when she's stressed. It's also possible they were picking on her and not letting her drink. She finally had a chance and over drank.

Did she eject it while you held her?

How old are they? The reason they rescue them, is that they are past prime laying and getting close to the end of their laying ability, and often times toward the end of their natural life span. Chickens, especially heavily laying chickens don't have a real lone life span.

Don't be surprised if. the others lay today and maybe tomorrow, those eggs were in the chute so to speak. Then with the stress of the move, they may quit for a couple of days, then start up again.
