Is my coop all wrong?!

Thanks that really helps. I’ll look up that breed and Google sizes. Reds are between 6-8 lbs I think, but one site called them a large breed.

A fact about Australorps that I find amusing is that many, if not most, of the trait descriptions in their SOP uses the word "medium" -- making them, in my mind at least, the archetypal chicken. ;)

It's only about 18" counting what's under the roost, I think.

My Australorps are a medium-sized breed. I haven't had RIRs so I don't know how they compare.
Found it. It said this:
“We cannot refute that Rhode Island and Australorps are heavily-built species. Nevertheless, Reds are slightly larger with Rhode Island Reds adult roosters weigh roughly 6.8 to 8 pounds and hens at 6 to 7.5 pounds. More or less, Bantam Reds weigh 2 to 3 pounds. Inversely, the average size for Aussie roosters is 6 to 7 pounds, with the hens approximately weighing 5 to 7 pounds. In addition, bantams averagely weigh 1 to 2.4 pounds.”
So I still won’t know if a 12” space will be sufficient for one RIR. But it will be worth it to try cause if I can have all the roosting confined to the left side then we can build a nice sandbox poop board and make daily cleanup much easier. 😁

Good to know.

Australorps lean more to the layer end of the dual purpose concept. I don't know about RIRs. I don't much care for red chickens so I never really looked into them. :)

(That's purely a personal aesthetic preference with absolutely no reflection on either the merits of the breed or the aesthetic preferences of people who find them gorgeous and who might find my black, white, "blue" (grey), and black-and-white flock boring). ;)

Hubby will remove the two current roost bars and install a 2x4 laid on the wide side. Then I think we will try the two bars t-d
Let's talk more about that when I come over to do the vent.
It isn't just a matter of linear feet of space per bird that needs to be met. They need room to maneuver to fly/hop up to the roosts and back off.

The roosts that are in the coop are fine to use if they are turned to "plate" style instead of on their sides.

When this roof is finished I'll be over to take care of the ridge vent. It'll probably take me less time to put the vent in then it took Carla's son to get those shingles up on the roof for me. But I'm very grateful for it.

We are looking at adding a vent over the door and one on the opposite side for cross ventilation. We can’t take it back esp as I tung oiled the inside. I feel very deceived by The Hen House Collection which brochure assured it could house 8-10 chickens! So we thought six would easily fit. We also stupidly assumed that Amish built meant the Amish designed it and we figured they ought to know what they are doing. I feel so taken! 😡😡
You aren't alone. This happens daily.

I saw that. Hell, I could swing by on my way home from work and do it for you... for a price!! I work in Binghamton.
I'm not kidding. If you want, I can swing by and take a look and let you know what you can do. I am finishing up my own roof this weekend and if I have any caps left, I'll give them to you. They'd be a close match as I'm putting in Owen Corning Brownwood architectural. You would only need a single 4' vent. That's only about $13.
Up the hill from it?
😭😭😭😭
Dobie you da bomb!

Her son helped me too. It's no big deal for me to do a construction project. I can do most of this kind of thing in my sleep (and do! It makes for a long night). I'm happy to help someone in need.
😭😭😭 We need more people who don't even think twice about offering help when they are able.
