I'm currently a bit short of roost length for my big coop (need to both do some culling and make some modifications), and some of them roost on the support crossbars.

Thanks for the picture! It really helps seeing how they make do with what they have! How long is that little crossbar that the two are on? Also, are your hens bigger or smaller than my Rhode Island Reds will be?

I took a look at the coop last night. The construction is not the same as in the link provided. The linked coop is walk-in. This coop is wiggle, squat in.
Getting the soffit boards off will take more work that it appears in the pictures.
The fascia board went over the soffit board then the drip edge over the fascia. It would take a fair bit to get the board off without making a mess.
When I get the roof on the back of my house I am going to pop a ridge vent in for her and help with the roost situation. I am also going to install a pitched frame over the tiny run area and install a polycarbonate roof with decent overhangs to give them a bit more space.
We'll talk about adding fold down aprons around the perimeter as it is a tractor and the thought was to move it around the yard every few weeks but with 6 RIRs in there, the grass would likely be decimated in less than a week.
The coop is much smaller in person than it appears to be in the pictures.

It's only about 18" counting what's under the roost, I think.

My Australorps are a medium-sized breed. I haven't had RIRs so I don't know how they compare.

I would imagine that the construction is about the same, other than size.

The roofing is different. The linked is metal roofing over purlins over rafters. There is a larger space under the overhangs on the linked coop.
The OP has shingles over insulated roof deck. with just the width of the soffit board for an overhang, at least on the side opposite the nest boxes. It's a 1x4.

Tonya you are a God-send for sure. We were so excited to meet you, pick your brain and get help. I believe with a ridge vent and the modifications of deflectors on the window and vent plus the pop hole, we’ll be in good shape on ventilation. For summer, we may wack up a screen door for the long door if it gets too hot, but usually here, even in summer, our nights cool down.

Hubby will remove the two current roost bars and install a 2x4 laid on the wide side. Then I think we will try the two bars t-d and if the
At looks like they are not using then we’ll add a bar from window side over to the other bar. It’s pretty tight in there. Curses to Hen House Collection for claiming it could hold 8 chickens!

You’re idea for covering the run is brilliant too! I hope we can pull that off. I’m searching like mad for another run to add onto the door of the mini run. But of course we are dealing with snow and mess and really high winds up here on the hill. Nothing looks right so far. I will start a thread for that.
