I just bought this coop from Costco. It is a coop and feathers brand. It said that it would be large enough for 4 adult chickens. I'm second guessing that. Can anyone shed some light. Do you think I will need to build a run off of this coop?

Welcome to our forum!

Some inside dimensions of the coop and the run would help -- but, honestly, it looks like it might house two comfortably, at least in the coop if you don't put food or water in the coop portion. Four hens should have a 24f sq ft of free floor space in the coop and 40s sq ft of run. Now, these are rough estimates, designed to be the minimum needed to prevent pecking, feather pulling and, ultimately, cannibalism. Chickens like all the space they can get!

Unfortunately, this is the usual story with these prefab coops. Also, they are very often not built well and not weatherproofed.

It partly depends what your climate is like. If you are in Florida, for example, it may be the coop would work fine if the wall on the run side is open space, so they can move freely between them. A roof or some source of shade over part of the run is very often a good idea, whether to provide shade in summer or some snow protecion in the north. Even in the north, summers are hard on chickens, as they tolerate cold much better than heat and require shade, breeze and lots of water to survive summer. I'll give you a link to a great article on space for chickens: You can go to your profile and add a general location, such as your state, which will be helpful in answering many questions.

Good luck!
