Is my Cuckoo Maran named Max or Maxine?

The chicks are nearly 10 weeks old and there is one we cannot figure out jsut yet. It's comb developed early and first compard to it's siblings, however they all have the same darker coloration. She/he is a bit bigger than the other siblings, but her I understand that cuckoo maran roosters are TYPICALLY a lighter silvery color. However, there are variations as well.

Yesterday, I heard her making some strange noises, not crowing exactly...but in my experience, I don't remember any hens making these noises!

I thought I'd let you take a look to see. I will try to upload some pictures I took yesterday am.

I believe That is a Max....but i also think you are right about the color. I thought the boys were lighter too. I guess not in your case. Do you think you will keep him?

I'm not allowed to keep roosters due to nise restrictions. I live in a small suburb and the code inforcement has had so many problems with roosters, they highly discourage them. One complaint and he goes!

I was so hoping for her to be a hen! Darn! I'll just have to find a home for him.

I have the same restrictions, however i spoke to the neighbors about it and they were all fine. I told them just the same.....if you find it to be a problem.....please feel comfortable to come talk to me. I am aware they are not allowed and will remove them if necessary. If you want to keep him, its worth a try.

Thanks for posting your pics of your marans, did you get them from a breeder or from a hatchery? I have 8 maran chicks from Ideal hatchery, just hoping mine are pretty like yours. 6 of mine are pullets and 2 are roos, or at least thats what they are supposed to be. I live in the country so we have no restrictions on roosters.

I got mine from a breeder north of Denver in Brighton. I was hoping for all pullets, but it looks like this one is a roo. He is a bit bigger and has developed his comb early. I understand in general though the maran roosters are a silvery color more thna the black. So I am leaning towards rooster despite the coloring.

Hope your cuckoos are doing well. These are a bit skittish, but hoping they will warm to me soon. I got them at 3 weeks of age and they are just now starting to warm up. Took them a while. We had for a time named them the cuckoos, implying they were a bit crazy!

They are pretty though.

That comb doesn't look like a single comb. Are you sure he isn't a Dominique?

It's weird. He looks like a he and a she, but the comb says he.

There are occasions where a rooster will be a "double black" or something like that, it's called. He will have a dark pullet color rather than the lighter roo coloring. Could be what you have there, but I dont think it's a Cuckoo Marans. What color are the legs? They seem white, but it could be a cross between the two breeds to get a rose comb.
