Is my dog in pain?

You didn't say if this had a sudden onset or came along bit by bit. I agree with another member....it sounds like nerve compression of some kind. If there was no injury, it could be a spinal tumor. Either way, I don't feel like it is more humane to exhaust all avenues just because they don't seem in pain. When a dog's life is drastically altered in a way that they can no longer be a dog, just as God intended them to be, it is a shame to put them through procedures and tests and meds of all kinds just so WE won't have to be sad when they are gone. If you gave him a good life with lots of love and he was safe and secure, you have done the best you can. Now, make sure he doesn't lose any of that. If you get a second opinion and they say nothing can be done, you have done the best you can...let him go in peace and in your arms. Everything must die...its just the manner of their living that matters most.

I know what you are going through and I have made the same decisions. I mourned for 2 years until another animal needed me and had noone else. I probably wouldn't have known about her if someone hadn't remembered that my good dog had died and I was heartbroken and thought that I might want her. I have had her for 5 years now and she went from being abandoned on a five foot chain to living in our loving and safe home. She had been in and out of the pound several times in her 2 years on the Earth. When a door closes, a window opens. I still cry over my Jimmy but then I reach down and hug my Lucy and it feels much better.

I once read a wonderful prayer....

The Rainbow Bridge story

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together

Part of your problem can be solved with dogie diapers, Ive seen them in the Drs Foster and Smith Catalog. For male or female dogs.
