Is my duck sick? [SOLVED]

Could you go into more detail why the hot weather keeps you from getting her into a lukewarm tub of water? Maybe I`m just tired.

It's very hot where we are, and she always hides under a leafy sapling we have near their pool. Sometimes she stays there all day and only leaves to forage and drink some water. If the weather wasn't as hot, I would put her in a lukewarm tub of water, but another problem will arise. My family does not want my ducks indoor

Thanks for the reply, She laid an egg today, but for the last 4 days she laid 2 soft shelled eggs. It is very hot here in Australia, almost 35 degrees Celsius. She is loves food so much and is either sleeping or eating/foraging. I'll keep an eye for her, and buy some oyster shells, where can you usually buy that?

Most feed stores sell oyster shell. Seems I read hot weather can have something to do with their eggs also so if your experiencing very hot weather that could be another reason for soft shells and panting and of course laying around, But dif get the oyster shell and put it into a separate bowl she'll eat it as needed. Make sure their pools are out of the hot sun if possible. and that they have clean cool water to drink. and the best feed you can buy. and please keep us updated

See what you can do about being able to handle her so that you can get a closer look at her. Since it is warm where you are, get a tub of some sort - kiddie pool, concrete mixing pan, small water trough - really large bucket. Something.

Get her into water so that you can watch her closely for a while. Look for anything off. Swelling, tenderness, unusual heat in her legs or bill.

It is not always easy - but if you cannot handle your duck, it will be difficult to find what is wrong.

She may have a systemic infection and need antibiotics right now.

The feed says it doesn't need supplements because it has everything for egg production and healthy ducks, but its better to play it safe.

It's not necessarily the feed as much as maybe the duck, some of them just don't process the nutrients in the feed as well as others. so we use oyster shell, calcium gluconate, calcium citrate ect to help them out. She may just need a little more help. She won't eat any more than she needs they seem to know. Here it's inexpensive too. Glad to hear she seems to be getting back on track..

Hey all! My duck seems ok now, she laid 2 healthy eggs two days before and no more heavy breathing or other symptoms! She's enjoying a swim and seems ok ^_^

Thank you so much for the replies people! I can't believe there are so many useful replies to this thread! My KC girl has normal breathing now, and laid a normal egg today, if you guys want I'll keep you updated if any changes occur! I will buy some oyster shells to see what happens.

Was she a first time layer? How old is your duck?
