Hello, this is my first year having my own chickens. I did have them growing up as a kid though. So I have this almost 7 week old EE, which I thought was a pullet, but now I’m second guessing. I was watching them yesterday and I noticed she picked up a piece of food and clucked like a rooster to let them know she had food. I’ve never had EE chickens, but I’ve read they can be hard to sex until their more mature. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

I haven’t seen that behavior in young pullets, but they can be vocal.

That’s what made me think she was a cockerel all of a sudden. She kept picking up and dropping the piece of food while clucking just like a rooster would.

I also believe she is the head pullet of the gang. Would a leed hen kind of Take on the roll of a rooster and find food for the others?

She looks like a pullet except for the faintest shoulder coloring (some of mine are getting it too at a similar age so I'm be perplexed as well) but it is odd that she's tidbitting[/QUOTE

I think I will wait till he or she is 10-12 weeks of age, then I will post more pics if I don’t know by then.
