Is my goose not getting better.

I bet that Baytril has been very effective in clearing up infections. It is an extremely good antibiotic and it is for that reason that it is not allowed to be used in food animals - because of the fear that this will decrease the utility of related drugs in humans.

Even in exotic pet birds, vets are moving away from using this drug as a first line antibiotic. It is still carried on some websites but is not legal for use on food animals in the USA.

If your vet is using Baytril in food animals they are in violation of federal rules and are not as up on avian medication as they should be.

Advise them to check out FARAD.org and to stop using fluoroquinolones in poultry. This has been in effect since 2005. They can also contact their state veterinarian for specific guidance.

My apologies, I assumed you were eating the eggs, selling the eggs, and/or putting the older birds & roosters into the stewpot - or were transferring the offspring to someone who might do any of the above to the birds.

The restriction still applies to food animal species, of which chickens, ducks and geese are members.

i will certainly send those links to my vet, and mention what you have said. i know many medications are used off label, even with people. But i can't imagine my vet would do anything illegal. Do appreciate your input, though.

I wasn't able to grab her and check her out.

Anyway, she is doing much better. She has been walking around a lot more and her eating habits are back to normal.
