Well, I decided to make a new nesting box and got it all done and my DB says it may be too small.
I made it from 12" boards which is acturally 11 1/4" in reality. So the floor in each box is 11 1/4" square.
The Height is where it may be too small. The bottom box is 12 1/4" high, but by the time i put a board across the front to keep the shavings or straw in the box the opening ended up being only 9" high... and the top box opening only 7 3/4". I hate to think I did all that work for nothing. Do you think it will be ok or do I need to take apart and re-do it?

Thank you! It's like girl power! I did it myself! Then to think it's too little really bumbed me out! It's in the coop as of yesterday and they laid an egg on the floor right next to it. They have not laid in a box yet. Just started laying a few weeks ago. I wish I had some golf balls.

Golf Balls, Easter Eggs ( I did this and filled with gravel), wooden eggs, heck if you have kiddos look threw their toys... Another thing I have done is pick up the egg and put it in the nestbox.. Oh yeah mark the egg first so you dont eat it later.. It took my girls about three days to get the hang of the nest box..

Great job. I usually make mine a little taller as the hen always stands up to lay her egg. (Lower one looks great, upper just a tad cramped for height)

I think your right about the top one being a bit cramped for height. The roof is pitched 5" higher in the back than the front but i was worried if they could get in very easily.

That was gonna be my questions. For my EEs, BRs, etc, they'd be fine with boxes that size. My Jersey Giants, however, would never fit. Bantams? Plenty of room. For many breeds it is fine, but some breeds are too big for that size.
