The behavior of your pup is a result of his basic nature and your training. Congratulations on a job well done. Why not get involved in a formal obedience training program and become involved in obedience trialing? It is great fun. And a good bonding experience for you and your dog.

I have a blockhead and he's the best dog I could ever ask for!
He is now 8 years old and still knows every trick we taught him. He has NEVER been on a leash except when necessary like in Vet's offices and in line for shots.
We've also taught him to catch a treat off his nose. We put a small treat (not too heavy) on the tip of his nose and he will sit and wait until we say "get it" and he will then toss it in the air and catch it

My lab was named "Hunter", which fit him perfectly. Best dog I have ever owned...didn't chew up anything, never pottied in the house, when I said "kennel" he would immediately go into his kennel...his personal space. Always friendly, yes he learned the commands and quickly too, and he never forgot them. Of course, if you forget to use them, he won't know to do them, will he? I think you picked the best dog there is, especially for a family atmosphere. Keep up the bonding with your dog...he will repay you for years to come.

Dachshunds on the other hand have one brain cell that misfires more often than not.

I completely disagree! Most dachshunds I have known are extremely intelligent. Trainable? Well that's a different story! They just have their own agenda. But in general I have found them to be excellent at problem solving when the reward is something they want. I also have a golden. She has been very easy to train, but I still think my dachshunds are better at problem solving and getting what they want. Although I do believe my golden has learned a lot from her dachshund "sisters".​

There is a reason most seeing eye dogs are Labs

they are smart, well most of them i know a few that have the potential to be smart but rather sit there and bark at nothing

Labs are great dogs! And very, very smart. Mine is a 10 yr old chocolate female, Kona, who was a quick learner from day one. She never went to puppy school but learned sit, stay, etc. very fast. We never crated her but she has a little den under the piano bench where there's a nice mat for her to get comfy on. From day one she was attached to me with an invisible leash and to this day she is never more than 5 ft away from me when I am home. I LOVE this dog! And yours is adorable!

I wish we had named her "Kindling." She loved to chew sticks into tiny pieces. Friends of ours had a wonderful black Lab whose name was Chukka. What a great dog she was and hunted with Ron almost to the end of her life.

My grandfather raised English Setters for hunting and he told me that a dog is only as smart as his master. If you have a smart dog, it's because you are doing a great job with the training. Keep up the good work!
