Roo sees me feeding a hen and makes grumbling noises, he pinches food from my hen instead of getting his own food from my hand.

This morning after letting them out of the coop roo was chasing my hen but she was running away/ignoring him. He responds with his little dance kicking his legs out backwards.

The hen still ignored him so he attacked a rusty metal pillar - he was actually pecking the metal with his beak.

Then a little later he jumped on her what seems like roughly so I shooed him away

Then a little later again I heard a commotion and roo is standing on top of the coop crowing, while the hen is inside laying an egg..

Is he being a good roo?

You are in a better position to judge if your roo is being good. How old is he?

Here's a tip. Leave your roo alone as much as possible or you are going to be giving him mixed signals. He behaves by instinct. You really shouldn't be interfering unless he's doing serious damage to a hen.

Interfering with a roo trying to do his job in a flock is sort of like snatching a bone away from a dog. Not smart.

Is said male young? Specified behavior happens to be quite normal when maturity initially hits.

Unless he's putting unnecessary stress on both you and your girls, or harming anyone involved, the current situation doesn't sound too serious. However, it all boils down to what you're willing to bear.

my roo was a jerk as a youngster, taking food first and clumsily trying to catch and mount an older hen etc., but he's grown up to be a good un. Give your lad time, and good luck!
