Hi everyone! New to the group here. We got our chickens less than 2 weeks ago (they’re roughly 12ish weeks old) and one of our two roosters is almost always laying on the ground and just seems lethargic. We brought them all outside yesterday and he pecked around for a little then laid down. I’ve seen him eat and drink on occasion and sometimes he’s up and moving around, but a majority of the time I see him he’s laying down.

I managed to see him poop yesterday and it was mostly clear… no other chickens seem affected or anything. Is he lazy? Sick? I’ve put diatomaceous earth around their coop. We’ve got dirt/pine shaving floor, they always have food/water access and they have a dust bath. This is our first time owning chickens I want to make sure im doing everything I can to take good care of them!

Thanks!

Are they still getting chick crumbles or all flock? Try wet some of it in a dish and see if he'll eat that, and/or scrambled eggs.

Does no other chicken experience these symptoms at all? I was thinking he could have coccidiosis since this is a new place for them, but I would think the others would have symptoms, too. I think I'd put them on Corid to be on the safe side.

Still crumbles yes! We’veonly had them for just over a week and he’s definitely the only one acting a little funny. Last night I saw him poop a normal one and checked his crop and vent and everything and no signs of anything. I’ll try the water with food mix and eggs today!

Is it harmful to just treat everyone for coccidiosis anyways to be safe?

It is safe to treat them all and check them for lice and poultry mites also.

A thorough deworming could help as well in case it is worms deprivingf him of nutrients and causing his weakness.

And welcome to the BYC community! :frow
