Hi all,

My traditional Serama hen hatched out two little chicks this past January - they are now four months old.

For a long long time I thought both of them were pullets, however one of them recently started crowing and their comb is larger and redder than it’s sibling.

Now, I know crowing usually equals male, but I also heard Seramas usually show their sex MUCH earlier. So now I’m really confused. Either way is fine - their dad unfortunately died from Marek’s, so I need a rooster anyway, I’m just really unsure :)

See attached pictures (some with its sibling, who is the smaller one with the smaller comb)

Different Serama bloodlines show their ages at different times, depending on what is bred into them. I had a frizzle cockerel who I thought was a puller for a very long time. I think that you have a pullet and a cockerel based on how the comb development compares between the birds.
That makes sense, thanks! These are my first Serama chicks, and while I know their colors don’t breed true, Nugget looks nothing like his dad did at about the same age (his dad was VERY clearly a roo, with a giant comb and long tail feathers). These past months have been an interesting learning experience.
