Is my speckled sussex a roo?

That's a sick bird. Get her poly vi sol vitamins without iron and put 2 drops 2 times a day. I also sprinkle probios and amoxicillian in wet mash. Good luck. My SS was much worse at that age and she survived. Looks like brooder pnemounia.

The lady you talked to was wrong! Your chick will die if you don't take action. Good luck.

You better treat your whole flock. This illness is catchy!

If it's cocci, antibiotics are the wrong thing to do. Feed store folks rarely know what the heck they're talking about, unfortunately. Coccidiosis is a protozoan, not a bacteria.

I'm not sure what is wrong, but that is a sick chick. Never consult feed store personnel about illness in chickens. Ask BYC folks, like you just did.

She is 4 weeks old. It's hard to tell what she has. I'm not sure what to treat her for? I'm not sure if I should try everything at once? Or try one thing if it doesn't make her better move on to something else? She does have a little bit of a sneeze now too. She seems to be moving around fine and still eating a lot. I put the antibiotic in the water but that might not be what she needs. I'm just so sad for her and want to help. Thanks for everyone trying to help my sick chickie!

Nicole01 what probios do you use? Also for the poly vi sol without iron can I just go to the store and get the kind for babies or is there a special one you use? Thanks for your help I will try that. I also have heard from many people cider vinegar is good. Has any one had luck with that?

I forgot to say on the ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)you need to get the one with mothers. Bragg is the most common brand. If you were using cider wood shavings it could have effected your chicks but not likely. This looks like something more. Yes the kids Poly vi sol is what people are referring to. I give my girls and Schiff brand Acidophilus pill dissolved in their water. (only because that what I have on hand) you can offer yogurt that has probios in it but not any with sugars in it. Good luck I have found chickens are great at bouncing back.

Thanks nakstk. I gave her some apple vinegar tonight. I was using wood chips but I am now using paper made bunny bedding. I noticed the day i got her that she would cough a little but i just thought she was clearing her throat. I wish i would have done all this sooner. I will make a trip to the store tomorrow to get all the other stuff to make her all better I hope. She is such a nice chick I hope she has a fast recovery!

Probios is a probiotic bought at a local farm supply store. I use 1/4 tsp in a small bowl of wet mash. The poly vi sol is in the vitamin section and infant vitamins. The antibiotics I use is fish mox or fish flex bought at an online pet store which are human grade antibiotics. I sprinkle just a little of a 250mg for a chick.

Pine is perfectly fine to use. Your going to spend useless money using the paper bedding. It's expensive. Pine is much cheaper and better.

Here is a video after a week treating my sick hen. Not all the chicks were sneezing as she was. The whole flock in the brooder caught this illness. It took 2-3 weeks for a full recovery. She too, is a speckled Sussex. When she first got sick, I though she was going to die.

Here she is on the far right later that year. Also there is the other baby chick in the video in the middle.

I'm glad your girl made it passed her sickness. She looks great now! I started mine on the poly vi sol vitamins, apple vinegar, antibiotic and probios in mash. I'm happy to say she is breathing normal now! She still will sneeze but only every once in a while. So I think she is getting better. I'm also giving the vitamins to my other chickens too so they stay well. Thank you so much from your help :D

Good luck! Speckled Sussex are very small as chicks! Especially the females. I swore mine was a bantam due to her tiny tiny size, but she's full grown and a big hen! She lays a light tan egg a day.

It's not uncommon for chicks to arrive from the hatchery to the feed store sick with the gasping motion. They are stressed easily, which weakens their immune system and are more susceptible to illness. It's the first thing I look for in buying a chick, the gasping motion. Once they get sick like this, they are carriers for life and it passes the illness to the other chicks.

My neighbor across the street bought chicks from the same store. I told her to treat her chicks and I gave her antibiotics, probios and vitamins. She decided not to treat until after one died. The rest lived once they were treated. She just didn't think anything was wrong and against antibiotics or other substances.

Good luck with your flock! I've learned so much about chickens this past year. I've done so much research on breeds and on illness.

I keep my chicken cabinet stocked with antibiotics, probios(I keep in freezer), apple cider vinegar, oxine ah, Sevin, DE, vet wrap(for bumblefoot), antibiotic ointment, face mask/gloves for cleaning, and cocci medicine(Corid) on hand in case of an emergency. I need to buy the Valbazen dewormer yet, it's next on my list.

We buy the pine bedding in the horse section at the farm store. It's very cheap. Under 5 bucks for 5 cubic feet of pine. We use it in the coop and our run is sand.

I'm sure Freckles will be fine! I love the breed. My SS Maple runs to me when I walk outside. I free range most the day.
