Yep! However, depending on the type of rock, it wont' stay in the gizzard as long and will break down more quickly.

You are correct. What a chicken eats goes as is into the crop, where it is slowly funneled into a very small "stomach" for some digestive additives--then to the Gizzard where it is 'chewed', that is, ground into material that can be digested as it moves into the intestines and so on. The Gizzard is best able to break down whole grains and other chunky bits that they eat when full of grit. Longest lasting grit is Granite, that lasts well. All other rock and stone is so much softer, that it wears down fast and that is why granite grit is best choice, works really well for best utilization of feeds, seeds and grains. I can't find grit to buy in our poultry shops, they offered me little stones of calcium carbonate.

Many people give grit to the birds as free choice. I have too in the past but the grit seemed to end up on the floor so now I put it in their feeders now and then but I do have a lot of birds. They take what they want. I also put oyster shells in with their feed too and the females take what they want. Works best for me. Again, good luck and have fun...

We let ours just eat dirt and they've been find for a decade

That will work ok. It's not quite as hard as granite but will last quite awhile.

Unfortunately that's more of an oyster shell substitute (calcium) and not the same as granite grit for digestion.

If you can find a bag of small gravel that should do just fine, the birds will pick out pieces that are right sized for them.
