For up to a year, but more typically 10 months or so. The goal would be to breed her again a couple months after she has a calf. Then dry her up at least a month before she has the next one.​

What a fascinating article!!!!!! Thank you for sharing it. I had no idea that one cow made such a difference.

I talked it over with the bf and the family - no cow (unless it's for meat.) I need to research fencing of the way back for goats, instead.

Run a strand of hotwire, POWERFUL charger, between those bottom boards. You might be able to get away with one line.

can you afford a ream of 2x4 wire to run along the bottom? I think that weould be a nice inexpensive solution. you shouldnt have to do much more than staple it to the existing boards

My goats would easily jump a 5-6 foot fence. Sometimes we would find them on the sheds roof (10 foot high) and they were enjoying the sun!

id put wire fencing over the board sot block the gaps...

then id probably personally go with a couple of nigerian dwarf goats or mini milkers (mini nubian, mini lamancha, mini oberhasli, mini saannen ect)
if your not interested in milk go with a couple of pygmy, pygmy fainter of kinder goats. (all of which make fine meat goats and the kinders are often good milkers too)

the mini breeds arnt typically as hard on fencing directly so as long as they cant climb it and theres nothign neer the fence they can use to jump the fence they should be ok...
standard breeds are supposedly less likley to try and jump over the fence, but typically harded on the fencing itslef as they tend to push, and lean more...

but you will need someting in those gaps between boards, electric might work, but id personally go with good strong no climb fencing and add a line of electric if you need it as a back up.

I have a horse, goat & a cow that live together in one fence, my horse didn't like the cow at first, but now they don't mind eachother​

With your current fence, goats would easily be able to find out the grass is greener on the other side. I agree a strand or two of electric would keep them in.
