Is Rooster Dance Always Aggressive?

Being frightened or afraid of a rooster is natural if you've never being around them. They'll instinctively sense you're nervous and it can make them suspicious of you. This leads to many roosters being culled.

The dance has a few different meanings.

It's a Greeting like Hello.

It's, hey pretty lady. (Mating Dance)

Show of dominance.

Never had one dance at me to show dominance, even my butthead roosters. Especially Demon. He just charges, & kicks me up my legs. No warning.
I have 4 roos. One is a jerk and he never warns me, except the occasional hostile tidbiting (throws sticks and stuff up in the air). He usually just runs up and kicks or bites me. The one that dances for me sometimes nips like a puppy. He just wants to be picked up and hugged.
But, I have never been afraid of them so they don't mess with me. In fact, the rest of them run away from me to avoid being hugged. 😆
I really think the key to having non aggressive roos is to never fear them. I will never be afraid of a bird.

I don't fear Demon(Good reason for the name), but he's so aggressive.

He's been mean since he was a chick. He did tame, up abit when he was young, but now he's worser, then he's ever been. Charging the fence, following me along the fence. Biting me when grabbed, kicking me up my legs everytime I go into the coop.

He killed my friendly Sumatra cockerel, Shadow, but now I'm stuck with the boy that's filled with pure evil.

I'm pretty social with my roosters from newborns, hand feeding, and sitting on my lap or chair next to me. Most tend to stop interacting with me much after they go through puberty (I don't change anything in my behavior intentionally, they just kind of drift away).

My philosophy (which I first heard on here), is to be a horse among squirrels. This means I'm not part of the pecking order and I'm not seen as a chicken, but as a huge beast who is apart from them (but not inheritantly frightening). I generally don't participate in the chicken's dominance activities. Because I'm not a chicken and I'm not to be seen as one. I don't expect my roosters to move out of my way, nor do I walk around them. I physically fix my gaze on a spot on the fence where I want to go (intentionally selected to pass next to the rooster), and I go there in a straight line at a consistent speed. I don't go around him, nor do I make him move. He is rather almost beneath my notice, like a squirrel to a horse. I'm not part of the pecking order, I'm outside of it. This is easier said than done sometimes, but you get the idea.

So, for me with my birds, I would view dancing as problematic, because he's viewing me as a chicken. And that opens the door to dominance behaviors, whether or not the dancing itself is. The one and only rooster that I've had that became aggressive with me, was also the only one that danced at me more than once or twice.

That said, you did just remove the other rooster, so he's adjusting to his new dynamic. I would give him a few days before I would worry about the dancing. You may literally never see it again once he feels settled.

Yikes. I'll be honest, this sort of behavior would get a rooster culled for me. There are so many roosters, I'd just as soon have a nice one, and I don't want him passing down genes to his chicks for aggression. It also seems to stress out the hens when the rooster is freaking out all the time. Birds and people seem happier with a nice roo.

I'm kinda stuck with him at the moment. He's my dad's Sumatra, & he's too pretty to eat.

He bit me on my arm three times the other day. I had to remove him from the area briefly.

It's funny. Out of 3 butt heads I have out of 21 roosters, he's the meanest.

18 of my Roosters, are friendly, & respectful. While only 3 are meanies.

Demon, is the worst of the worst.

Cinder, is an ankle biter.

Daredevil, he rarely bites, or kicks hands, he attacked my face once, but hasn't done it again in years. He seems to have fixed his behavior since those few incidents.
