I've read a variety of information about giving scratch to young chicks in the heat. I've heard that it makes them too hot in the summer and to never give it to them. I have also read that there is no problem with giving them scratch at any age.

Any opinions through experience? My hens are 8 weeks old.

carbs cause heat- I wouldn't the way the temps are ... people who say its ok year around, find out what food they give and if they free range and were they live (I'm in FL) and how long there chickens live- if they are only keeping them alive 1-2 years then scratch mighty make scene.

I've NEVER given scratch to my chickens.

I do give BOSS (black oil sunflower seed) as a daily treat, though. Higher protein, and really good for feather growth. My girls are gorgeous. (Yes, I'm biased, but lotsa people say so.)
