This is my sons Rhode Island Red Rhodie. She is so sweet but I'm wondering with the size of her comb could she be a he. She is only 9 weeks old. Being a mother of 3 boys, I keep having a feeling all 5 of my pullets are gonna turn on me!!! Please let me know what you think.

I'm guessing pullet. She does have long tail feathers but I don't see a roosterish looking saddle or hackle feathers. Watching to see what others say, as I'm still learning.

I am thinking cockerel. But can you get a closer shot of his/hopefully her back so i can see if there are any sickle feathers? Also, a pic of the tail feathers? Thanks!

I will try to get some better pictures. It starting pouring on me and I was chasing the chickens around like a crazy person. Lol

Well I'm really hoping you are right! I'm so sad thinking about giving this one up.

You really can become attached! You can create a rooster flock, but in my opinion they would just be eating feed and not contributing anything, like hens do with eggs. I hate giving my roosters up to certain deaths. If you want to do a rooster flock, that would solve your problems, because if you put all the roosters together with no hens, what is there to fight about? If he is your only rooster, it is good to have one. If you have more, the rule of thumb is ten to twelve hens per rooster. Most of the time, rooster that grow up together as brothers (from chicks to adult) won't fight, but if you don't have a lot of hens, they will overbreed them.

Unfortunately we are not allowed to have roosters where we live.
