Thanks! I’m new to having chicks. Since they were 3 days old, I’ve always been concerned if they were truly girls. Pardon my newness, they are growing and I don’t know what a rooster would look like at this age. She’s the only one this red. I thought I’d ask. What is your concern? She looks like her comb and wattles are getting nice and red, so maybe she will start to lay soon. At 16 weeks, a cockerel would look pretty unmistakable already lol
Thanks! Didn’t know roosters crow at this age.I agree with @TheDawg and @Chipmunk Chicks , my Barred Rock girls have always had big, red wattles and combs that could maybe be mistaken for a rooster, but you would also hear/see the suspected chicken crowing and growing their beautiful rooster tail if breed allows.![]()
In this breed, cockerels get red combs and wattles like that at around 8 weeks old.My girls are 16 weeks today. I’m a little concern that this one may be a roo. What do you think?
Oh WOW!! This was a PERFECT answer. Thanks for the picture differences too.In this breed, cockerels get red combs and wattles like that at around 8 weeks old.
Some roosters will crow by this age, my earliest yet was 3 weeks old. Some other known roosters have not crowed before 18 months old.. also hens can crow.. pullets usually do not. Hens can also grow spurs.
Non hen feathered breeds like this one are sporting rounded or pointed gender specific saddle feathers.. starting around 12 weeks and often flowing like the examples from Google around 16 weeks..

My set of 3 hatchery barred Rock.. saw a maturity difference of more than 4 weeks between the group.
They get red like that about 4 weeks before the onset of lay in my experience, but time of year (daylight hours) may influence that some as well.
All that to say I agree.. she's a pullet!![]()
