I'm a little worried that there was a mistake at the hatchery. I ordered the ornamental layer collection from Murray McMurray, my bonus chick was most definitely a golden-penciled Hamburg rooster. However, this chick looks suspiciously like a rooster at 9 weeks of age. Unless this is a chick that fell off the conveyer belt at a totally random point and into my box, the only barred breed in this mix should be a Cuckoo Maran. Thoughts on either question?

Not sure of breed, probably barred rock or cuckoo marans. It looks like a cockeral, if it is only 9 weeks. They can surprise you though!

At nine weeks, no doubt that's a boy. Not a Dominique, they have rose combs. The light legs and messy barring make me lean toward Marans.

It is a Marans cockerel. Marans have white legs, Rocks have yellow. Dominiques have rose combs, which this one does not have.

Looks just like my Cuckoo Marans of the same age. I'm still holding out hope it could be a pullet. Still no pointed saddle feathers. I read that comb development is actually the least reliable way to sex a chick. I was disappointed when the comb suddenly developed and turned red. It's my favorite. Follows me around. Good luck. Definitely looks like a Cuckoo Marans though.

Thanks everyone. I was pretty confident on both counts. As a few stated, the legs say that "he" isn't a barred rock and the comb that he isn't a Dominique. Once he starts crowing (I'm not holding out much hope) I'll sell him.
