We recently had a very bad grain mite problem, and I want to prevent any other mite problems. I use sand in the coop and was wondering if I could toss in some sieven dust so they could dust themselves in it? My dad used to put sieven dust on our dogs back and it never hurt her so is it safe for chickens?

I've heard that people put Food grade DE in their feed for this purpose. There are a few existing FGDE threads on here. Definitely search for them. We put FGDE in our chickens food so they eat it.

Ditto, the DE in the feed will get rid of the grain mites. I use Sevin occasionally, but only when I notice a problem. I don't see the point in treating with pesticides unless they're necessary. Good luck, its been a bad year for mites here where I am. Ick, I hate those creepy crawlies

We bug bombed the shed they were in a couple nights ago and the next day the mites were still alive so I dusted the place with sieven dust. I also put their feed in our freezer! Hopefully they are gone now!!

I noticed the sieven dust has NO effect on the flies around here though! I HATE bugs!

No, sevin dust won't kill flies. You need to read the label to see what it is meant to kill.

If you can find a safe place to put it, Golden Malrin fly bait works well. The only problem is you have to find a place to put it where your chickens, kids, and pets can't get to it.
