Is the frizzle gene a detriment?

Wow, I am working on Mottled Sizzles. I have not yet made the cross but I would be very interested in some of your Mottled Silkie eggs how nice would that be to skip a generation in breeding the splits.

I just posted photos of the Mottled Cochin Mommy and I have a Frizzled Boy too. Here is a photo of two new Sizzles for me. One is smooth obviously and the Frizzled one in Buff.

i have both smooth and frizzled birds. we don't show, but i have some decent birds from various breeders who do. i do like do see the occaisional frizzle in the middle of the flock as it's just kinda neat to see them. i have had a curly whom a friend got at a auction, and it was hard to keep the bird from being to cold or hot. curlies do not have good insulating properties do to the overly mutated feathering.

Nice.......some pretty birds.

Sarah's got her "sizzles" nice......not that I know breed points of 'good' silkies.

When you people are talking about mottled silkies, sizzles, cochins you are referring to black or blue mottled? I've found with the mille fluer type patterns it's a palaver getting all the genes in the one bird

And to make matters worse I've been using my mottled line so long some of them are heterozygous for wheaten &/or columbian

Not that it'll take long to get them back but it's still a pain.

I would have to say I'm aiming at black or blue with mottling, but I certainly wouldn't turn down a mille

Yes, getting all the correct alleles present in a single bird is a challenge

Have you got reds? Another project coming up ????

I'd done black & blue mottled in orpingtons. A friend in Aus emailed me some photos of some amazing colours of Belgian bantam one of which was basically mille fluer but with a blue line instead of the usual black.......so I set off to make that colour in Orps. I've had them just about there but just not quite.
