Is there a difference?

Big, dirty and health problems are unfair classifications.

You have control over the factors that eliminate the dirty and unhealthy part.

As far as BIG, what's wrong with that? That is what I call efficient feed to meat conversion.

My wife's uncle has laying hens (BO's, DE's, BR's, RIR's etc) and they are disgusting and dirty b/c he uses a coop and run. We pasture our birds in a daily move pen and they are pretty clean.

As far as health problems, we supplement a high quality feed with kelp, minerals, and natural vitamins. Also add a little fish meal. Our birds reflect what they eat and live in.

Not trying to be a jerk, just can't believe how much misinformation get's continually spread around about the CX's before people have even tried them. And if they do try them and still think these things, I would question their methods.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. It's hard typing out thoughts properly, I didn't mean it. Before I found this site, I was googling nonstop and a lot of people (maybe they were more pro-life) were complaining of the problems plaguing the meat birds.

I was sort of relieved when I found that this site wasn't like that, as I plan to eat my roos out of the sussex straight runs that I got.

You will find all kinds of people here, from people that have a pet chicken in the house perched on their shoulder while posting on here (not always wearing a chicken diaper) to people that raise hundreds of chickens a year to sell as meat. Most of us are somewhere in between. Some of us eat our chickens and some keep them as pets until they die of old age. Most of us respect each others differences and the moderators do a pretty good job of stepping in when some people get out of hand. There are rules posted about how you are supposed to act and this is a family forum.

Because of the differences in our circumstances and goals, you have to be a bit careful in looking at advice and try to pick something that fits your situation, but in general, it is a great group of people.

I have only eaten meat birds, both cornish and the slower-growing colored broiler. I prefer the cornish as far as texture and ease of raising and processing. The colored broilers we raised were a decent bird but I find the cornish to be much more tender meat. My cornish go through and ugly stage as all chickens do, but they are very nice looking birds in general.
