I'd like to change my user name but I want to make sure it is not already taken or similar to someone else's.

Two people can't have the same username. I wanted to make my name Gallus or Flock Master but they were both taken so I added 64 at the end. You could probably search the name you want in the search bar and anyone with a similar name should pop up.
